Well team, it's that time of year when we're all itchin to pull out the ice shacks which will also mean pulling out the propane heaters we use in them. I know we've had discussions about this before and the topic here is refilling (or not) the 1 pounders from larger tanks with the special adapter, and/or safely disposing of the empty 1 pounders after they're about empty.

My experience with refilling them (yes..I bought the adapter years and years ago trying to save a few cents on gas) is..."don't do it" , not worth it, they do not fill consistently, and there is always fear of overfilling them, thus causing leaks at the valve. In fact, I built a tool to remove the center valve core so that once I "think" they're empty, the cylinder becomes open to free air and thus is safe to dispose of into the garbage, no chance of any explosion in your garbage can OR in the city facility.

I'll attach a pic of the tool I built. It's not fancy but does the job nicely. The long stem is actually a 16 penny nail that is just the right diameter. I used a dremel tool to notch the end and brazed the whole thing into a valve core tool body. Like I said, not real pretty but works great.

I've purchased a 5# refillable tank and a 11# tank that I carry along in my Clam portables. They are a much safer way to go than trying to refill the pounders.

Better be toting a spud bar and use it. If you don't have one, HOF does.

I had tennis shoes on so I didn't go out very far maybe 20 feet from shore but the ice was pure, black and thick. I punched a hole and tried some plastics with no luck until the feet got cold, it was more of a recono-spud mission anyway. Tomorrow off to HOF for some live wiggly things and back on to the ice!!

I just drove by Foster and where a guy could go sailing yesterday there were geese sitting on shale ice today. Sucks really.

There are pockets of water still visible, but for the most part Foster has some shale ice on it. Loosing the wind last night really did in the open water. The Zumbro usually puts on ice about the same time as Foster so it will be interesting to see if it too has sealed up.

I made a call to Trent [WCS] last night to "suggest" we put off our boating plans at Alma today in lieu of the forecast. Gotta say I didn't have to twist too hard on his arm to have him say uncle. Mike and I heard 5 degrees while we were yacking at the shop this morning and I can't imagine that two degrees would feel any different than the 7 degrees I fished Alma a couple years ago. I think putting this off a week was a good idea.

In another thread Jake suggested shallow water, no deeper than waist deep, and wearing waders for those who venture out this weekend. This might be good advice. Be careful out there.
